NWSL Shield Race: Three Points Separate Gotham, San Diego and Washington With Two Games Left

Gotham FC lead the NWSL on 55 points, San Diego Wave are one behind on 54 and Washington Spirit are on 52. Everyone has two matches left. This is the closest Shield race in years, and it will be settled on Decision Day.

Two competitions are decided in the NWSL each year. The Shield goes to the team with the best regular-season record, and the Championship goes to the winner of the eight-team playoffs. This week the first of those got a lot more interesting. Gotham were one win from clinching the Shield on Saturday and instead lost at Washington, while San Diego won again. With two matches left for every club, three teams can still finish first.

What you need to know

  • The table: Gotham 55 points, San Diego 54, Washington 52, all after 28 of 30 matches. Kansas City are fourth on 47 and cannot catch the leaders.
  • Gotham control it: win both remaining games, at Orlando on 25 October and at home to Utah on 1 November, and the Shield is theirs. Any dropped points let San Diego back in.
  • San Diego are the form team: five wins in a row, and the best goal difference level with Gotham at +13. They are already guaranteed a top-four seed and a home playoff match.
  • The deadline: the regular season ends on Decision Day, 1 November. The Championship is on 21 November.

Where the table stands

Here are the top four after Saturday's matches. The first three are separated by three points, and the leaders have the same goal difference as the team in second.

3Washington Spirit2816-4-840-26+1452
4Kansas City Current2814-5-950-38+1247

Washington have the best goal difference of the three at +14, which would matter if two teams finish level on points. With 58 the most they can reach, they need both rivals to drop points. Gotham can reach 61 and San Diego 60.

The weekend that tightened everything

Gotham arrived at Audi Field knowing a win, combined with a San Diego slip, could clinch a first Shield. Instead Lucia Di Guglielmo scored in the 70th minute, her first NWSL goal, and Washington won 1-0. It was the Spirit's first win over Gotham since June 2024, and it ended a four-match unbeaten run for the champions. The result also sealed a playoff place for Washington.

Earlier in the day San Diego won 2-1 at North Carolina. Melanie Barcenas scored inside four minutes, her seventh goal of the season and a new NWSL record for a teenager in a single year, and Trinity Byars made it 2-0 early in the second half. It was the Wave's fifth straight win. With Gotham losing, the gap at the top fell from four points to one.

Gotham: control, but no margin

Gotham are the reigning champions, and they have the simplest route. Denise O'Sullivan put it plainly after the defeat: win the last two games and the Shield is theirs. The Bats are unbeaten in their last 12 home matches in all NWSL competitions, according to Opta, and finish the season at home to Utah.

The concern is what is around that record. Coach Juan Carlos AmorĂ³s spoke after the Washington loss about new signings and players returning from international duty who had barely trained together. Gotham have also drawn with Angel City and now lost, so they have taken one point from the last six. Opta's pre-weekend projection gave them 83.3% to finish first, with San Diego on 11.8% and Washington on 4.8%. Those numbers were calculated before Saturday and will have moved.

San Diego: the form team

The Wave have won five in a row and have scored five goals inside the first five minutes of matches this season, the most in the league. Byars leads them with 11 goals, rookie midfielder Lia Godfrey has 12 goal contributions and six assists, the most of any rookie, and Barcenas has already made history at 18.

Their schedule is kind on paper. San Diego host Boston at Snapdragon Stadium on 25 October, and Boston are already out of playoff contention. A home quarter-final is guaranteed, so the Shield is the only thing left to chase in the regular season, and they are one point away.

Washington: from spoiler to contender

Washington lost the 2025 Championship final to Gotham, so beating them on Saturday carried weight. The Spirit kept a clean sheet through goalkeeper Sandy MacIver, her tenth of the season, and Leicy Santos returned from injury for the first time since August.

The maths is against them, but not hopeless. At 52 points they are three behind, and a win in each of their last two games would take them to 58. That is only enough if Gotham and San Diego both stumble, which is exactly why their next result matters less than what the other two do.

What happens next

Gotham play at Orlando on 25 October and finish at home to Utah on 1 November. San Diego host Boston on 25 October. Every club plays at the same time on Decision Day, so the Shield can be decided in the last round. Eight teams qualify for the playoffs, which start on 6 November, with the semi-finals on 13 to 15 November and the Championship on Saturday 21 November, shown on CBS.

Only three teams can win the Shield, and all three are already through to the playoffs. The seedings, home advantage and the bye-like rest that comes with the top spots are what is really at stake in the last fortnight.
