Barcelona vs Real Madrid: xG, Form and Who Has the Edge at Camp Nou?

Barcelona have won all nine league games. Real Madrid, under José Mourinho, sit third and are without a suspended Vinícius Júnior. Here is what the numbers say before Sunday's Clásico at Camp Nou.

El Clásico: Barcelona vs Real Madrid, Sunday 25 October at Camp Nou

The first Clásico of 2026/27 arrives with Barcelona perfect in La Liga and Real Madrid chasing, and with José Mourinho back on the Madrid bench for the first time since he left the club. Kick-off is at 21:00 CEST on Sunday 25 October at Camp Nou, on matchday 10. We look at the table, the form, the goals and the expected goals.

What you need to know

  • The match: Sunday 25 October, 21:00 CEST (20:00 UTC, 4pm ET), Camp Nou. La Liga matchday 10. The return fixture is at the Bernabéu in May 2027.
  • The table: Barcelona are first on 27 points from nine wins. Real Madrid are third on 21, one point behind second-placed Atlético Madrid (22).
  • The managers: Hansi Flick against José Mourinho, who is back at Real Madrid. His Clásico record is 5 wins, 6 draws and 6 defeats in 17 meetings.
  • Chronos Score model: expected goals of 4.2 for the match, a high-scoring profile.
  • Missing: Vinícius Júnior is suspended for Madrid after a red card against Villarreal.

Where the two teams stand

Barcelona have won every league game so far and have the best goal difference in the division by a distance: 39 goals scored and 9 conceded, a difference of +30 according to ESPN's table. Their last league game was a 5-2 win at Real Betis. Real Madrid have won seven and lost two, with a goal difference of +14, and are third, one point behind Atlético Madrid (NBC Sports table after matchday 9).

A win would put Barcelona six points clear of Real Madrid with 28 games still to play. It would not decide anything, but it would make the title race feel one-sided very early.

Goals and expected goals

Expected goals, or xG, measures the quality of chances rather than the score. A shot from close range in front of goal is worth far more than a long effort, and adding every shot together shows how many goals a team would be expected to score. Over a season it tells you which attacks are genuinely dangerous and which are living off finishing form. We explain the idea in more detail in our Premier League vs La Liga xG comparison.

Chronos Score's model puts the expected goals for this match at 4.2. That is the match total, both teams combined, and it is an estimate of how open the game should be rather than a prediction of the score. A figure that high points to an end-to-end game, which fits two teams that score freely and defend an aggressive line. One match preview also credits Barcelona with around 35.5 expected goals over their first nine league games, the highest in La Liga, although that figure comes from a different model than ours.

Flick against Mourinho

Hansi Flick's Barcelona are trying to win a third straight league title, and they have started with a perfect record. They have tightened their squad with Rodri, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi. They lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League earlier this week, so they arrive with a rare defeat behind them, though it does not touch their league run.

José Mourinho is back at Real Madrid after a long absence and this is his first Clásico since his return. His record in the fixture is mixed: 17 games, 5 wins, 6 draws and 6 defeats, with 25 goals scored and 31 conceded, according to Sports Illustrated. Real Madrid beat Sevilla 4-1 in their last league game and beat Roma 4-3 in the Champions League, a result that showed fight but also that they are conceding goals.

Who is missing

Madrid's biggest confirmed absence is Vinícius Júnior, who is suspended after a red card against Villarreal. That removes one of their main threats in transition and puts even more weight on Kylian Mbappé, who scored twice against Sevilla and has nine league goals. Match previews expect Barcelona's defence to be patched up, so both sides have a problem to solve. Teams are named only on the day, so check the confirmed line-ups before kick-off.

Where the goals come from

Raphinha leads La Liga with 12 goals, ahead of Mbappé on 9 and Lamine Yamal on 8. All three are in the conversation for individual awards: we looked at the shortlist, including Yamal and Mbappé, in our Ballon d'Or 2026 guide, and compared the goal and assist leaders of Europe's biggest leagues in our goals and assists analysis. Mbappé's chase of a record is the subject of our Champions League goals piece. You can follow every scorer and assist leader on our La Liga player stats page.

What to watch

Barcelona's high defensive line against Madrid's runners in behind, now without Vinícius. The first goal, in a game with a 4.2 expected goals total. And whether Mourinho sits deeper than the numbers suggest he should. Barcelona have won six of their last seven meetings, according to match previews, but that history carries less weight than the changes to both squads.
